(1) MANGANELLO, JENNIFER A. “TEENS, DATING VIOLENCE, AND MEDIA USE: A Review of the Literature and Conceptual Model for Future Research.” Trauma, Violence & Abuse, vol. 9, no. 1, Sage Publications, Inc., 2008, pp. 3–18, http://www.jstor.org/stable/26636172
(2) In this article Manganello discusses dating violence among teenagers and how social media plays a role in spreading harmful dating practices. (3) The author uses data from other sources, surveys and includes a model to strengthen their claims. (4) Their research focuses on connecting the link between teen dating violence and media in general. And based on the studies included, the author concludes that teens use what they see in media and apply it to their daily lives. (5) This article is useful to my research topic because the author suggests teens will be more likely to enter abusive relationships in the future because media may romanticize it or make it seem like a good thing. Not only that, but it may set behavioral problems as they continue to get older. (6) The main limitation to this article is it uses data from the late 90s and early 2000s to support their claims. Meaning most of the information has to do with media and things seen on television. While the article still references what I am researching, it focuses more on the media aspect than the social aspect. (7) Therefore, this article highlights the influences media has on the development of teens with data from their time. While these issues are still occurring, it is important for me to remember how this article was written in a different time. (8) This article will not be the main backbone of my research but will be useful to include some behavioral issues media may cause among teens.

(1) Brown, Jane D. “Mass Media Influences on Sexuality.” The Journal of Sex Research, vol. 39, no. 1, Taylor & Francis, Ltd., 2002, pp. 42–45, http://www.jstor.org/stable/3813422.
(2) This article reviews the influences media has on sexual beliefs and how teens may eventually use the harmful behaviors they view. Not only that but how they interpret this media and the ideas they learn from it. (3) The author uses studies of teens based on how they use such media and what they are gaining from it. Furthermore, there is a study done to also figure out these things and how the teens reacted after viewing sexual media after a few weeks. (4) Their research focuses on how teens are reacting to seeing sexual things in media and some things teens may do as a result of it (such as viewing sex as something that is consequence-free or more lustful than loving). (5) The article is useful to my topic because it highlights how media may cause teens to view sex as something it is not. It affects their development in the sense that they will view sex as a thing you do and move on from, rather than it being an intimate experience with another person. (6) A limitation of this article is it talks more of how teens view sex rather than how learning these practices in media affects their development. While it is discussed, the author only references my topic in a small section, (7) thus indicating that this article is more short-term than long-term effects. (8) This article will be handy to discuss how teens will interpret data from media but will not form the basis of what I will write.

(1) Monroe, Jamison. “The Effect of Social Media on Teenagers.” Newport Academy, Newport Academy, 2 Mar. 2022, https://www.newportacademy.com/resources/well-being/effect-of-social-media-on-teenagers/.
(2) In this article the author interprets various effects that may stem from social media usage among teens. Each section has a different effect and the impact it has, whether that be good or bad. (3) The author uses data and studies to identify some effects social media has on teens. Furthermore, it includes how each teen is different and reacted to the studies in various ways. (4) The research focuses on the negative and positive aspects social media has on teens such as mental health struggles or the addictive aspect. However, the article also highlights some positive effects as well such as allowing teens to find their identities. (5) This article is useful to my research topic because it talks about the effects these platforms have on teenagers and how it affects their development, which can get worse if not addressed. Not only that but it helps with any acknowledgements that social media can also be beneficial. (6) There are no big limitations to this article, but I do have to keep in mind that it references the pandemic. The other sources I will be using does not mention this and I must be mindful when choosing certain pieces of evidence. (7) All in all, the author indicates information that is more recent with conclusions made both pre and post-pandemic. (8) This article will be very helpful to my research and is the kind of structure I am looking for. It mentions the effects of social media and how these things may impact them later.

(1) Ehmke, Rachel. “How Using Social Media Affects Teenagers.” Child Mind Institute, 1 Mar. 2022, https://childmind.org/article/how-using-social-media-affects-teenagers/.
(2) This article analyzes the effects social media has on teens and some of the developmental issues they may have as a result of using it too much, such as imposter syndrome and the fact that teens are losing in-person social skills. (3) The author uses studies and interviews from a doctor to help strengthen their argument. (4) Their research focuses on the negative aspects of social media and how it can affect teens mentally or even put them at risk for stalking. Also, this article provides a section for parents on how they can help their teens if these things do happen. (5) This piece is useful to my research because it emphasizes the effects of social media on teens and how it affects their world view. (6) The limitations this article has is it talks about all teens regardless of how they use social media or how much time they are spending on it. It is crucial to remember everyone is affected by social media differently and this article seems to discuss those who use social media 24/7. (7) Therefore, this article highlights extreme effects and what can happen to those who are always relying on social media for whatever they do. (8) This article will be helpful in determining what my main points will be and the kind of information I will use. Furthermore, if I decided to only focus on the negative effects of social media, this article will give me a lot of evidence to support my reasonings.
